Some Mississippi students of the now defunct ITT Technical Institutes are worried about what they’ll do now that the schools are closed.
On Tuesday, the for-profit vocational school announced via email to students and faculty that with “profound regret“ they would be closing their doors for good.
ITT runs more than 130 campuses nationwide, but in Mississippi, the school had only one location with about 170 students.
Many of those students are now left with worrying about their future.
Brianna Douglas was supposed to graduate with an Associate Degree in accounting this term, but as of now, she doesn’t know when she’ll receive her diploma.
“Whoever graduates will get mailed – this is what I was told – will be mailed their certificates, and the reason there won’t be a graduation is because everybody got let go.”
Many of those ITT students have been left worrying about their future, but Bronwyn Martin from Holmes Community College says some of the state’s two-year institutions are looking to help students transfer.
“I can’t imagine what they’re going through,” says Martin. “I can’t imagine feeling like I was about to start the semester and finding out the week before the classes start that the opportunity was not there for me. We want them to know that there is an opportunity, while it may not be at ITT Tech, We’re just really across the street at Holmes Community College and there is still ample time for them to get enrolled in classes with us.”
ITT Tech had been in an ongoing battle with the federal government for receiving billions of dollars in government loans while failing to provide adequate job training for its students.
