July MPB Classics highlight A Bayou Legend

JACKSON, Miss.A Bayou Legend  is the title of the MPB Classics series for July 2021. A Bayou Legend is a television production of William Grant Still’s opera produced in 1979.

MPB Classics is a collection of original television programs by Mississippi Public Broadcasting. The programs document the local culture and history of Mississippi through literature, visual arts, folklore, music, storytellers and more.

Every month for the next three years, a new set of MPB Classics programs will be available for free on-demand viewing at video.mpbonline.org for two months. Afterward, they will be accessible through MPB Passport for paid subscribers. 

The July 2021 MPB Classics series A Bayou Legend will be available for free on-demand viewing until September 30. The series includes the following:  

 

  • A Bayou Legend (1979) A feature-length tale of love, jealousy, betrayal, and revenge set in a Creole community in the Mississippi Delta. An adaptation of William Grant Still’s opera produced by Opera/South and Mississippi ETV.

 

  • A Bayou Legend: Backstage (1979) 

A making-of featurette that shows how Opera/South and Mississippi ETV creatively collaborated to produce the television film of A Bayou Legend. It Includes never-before-seen footage of the cast and crew in rehearsals and on location.
