Mississippi Views
Stephanie Latham Photography captured these China roses in Lena, Mississippi, after a summer rain. Rosa chinensis are the oldest cultivated roses, brought from China in 1894. They are great for honeybees, butterflies, and birds. Email your favorite local views to photos@mpbonline.org.

Hurricane Preparedness
The 2024 hurricane season that started June 1 lasts until November 30. To alleviate the stress that comes with preparation for severe weather, the Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) shared tips on the importance of preparation. Here are a few:
Before a storm develops:
• Develop a detailed evacuation plan and share it with family.
• Assemble an emergency kit tailored to your family's needs, including water, food, medications, and clean clothing.
• Stay informed about the situation with local radio and follow storm trajectories and speeds by using hurricane tracking maps for as long as possible.
If a storm is predicted near you:
• Good sturdy shoes or boots are essential.
• Have all devices charged ahead of time (lowering the screen brightness can preserve battery life).
• Even before a warning is issued, getting in your safe spot with a pillow or blanket can help alleviate anxiety.
• Staying updated with radio and news is very important, but it may be too much for children and those with anxiety. Have a family member or friend stay updated to share as needed.

How to Make Sweet Tea Barbecue
Southerners are famous for their sweet iced tea and their loyalty to the beverage. When chef Scott Meeks accepted "Create Cooking Challenge: Easy Peasy," he remembered joking with his Southern mom that her sweet tea was more like a syrup. He decided to replace the molasses in his BBQ recipe with sweet tea and fans of the beverage will be delighted with the result.
• Strongly brewed tea (I steep 9 black tea bags with 12 ounces of hot water to get the tea with the absolute MOST kick)
• 1 bottle of chili sauce (12 ounces)
• 2 TBSP Dijon mustard
• 1 TBSP smoke paprika
• 1 cup of sugar
• Protein of your choice (beef, chicken, pork, or Meeks uses tofu)

Student Council Applications Open Now
The MPB Student Council is a unique opportunity for Mississippi students throughout the state in grades 8 - 11. Members lead MPB projects, produce a youth podcast, learn important social media skills, and design campaigns that resonate with their generation’s unique habits and expressions. It helps prepare them for college, careers, and beyond by sharpening their communication skills to actively participate in dialogues about development in Mississippi. Once their application is approved, students serve on the council for a one-year term with an option to extend their service.

City of Jackson Recognizes Mississippi Blues Legend with Street Renaming
Living blues legend Bobby Rush was recognized May 29 by the City of Jackson with a street renaming. A stretch of Ellis Avenue is now known as "Bobby Rush Boulevard," from I-20 to Capitol Street. The three-time Grammy winner grew up in the West Jackson neighborhood and accepted the honor in an emotional speech thanking his friends, family, and the community for supporting his love of music. Rush will visit "Next Stop, Mississippi" on June 14 at 10 a.m.

Go Backstage with 'Grantchester' Ahead of New Season
The cast and creators of the hit English mystery TV series — based on James Runcie's "Grantchester Mysteries" books — take viewers behind the scenes on June 9 at 8 p.m. For eight seasons, a young vicar softens the gruffness of the overworked local Detective Inspector and together they solve crimes and investigate mysteries. It all takes place in a fictional 1950s version of the real village of Grantchester in Cambridgeshire. Season 9 premieres June 16 at 8 p.m. Click button for a preview of the new vicar!
