Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn says he is in preliminary talks with relevant committee chairs about a recent report from the Justice Department detailing failures at Parchman State Penitentiary. The report claims the state is violating prisoners' 8th and 14th amendment rights. A similar investigation in neighboring Alabama resulted in a lawsuit in 2020.
