Attorneys say racist motivations behind Brookhaven shooting incident
Twenty-four-year-old D’Monterrio Gibson was working in Brookhaven, delivering packages for FedEx in January, when two white men began chasing and shooting at him. Gibson, who is Black, was able to escape without being injured.
"He knew better than to stop for a man who was not the police with a gun pointed at him. Soon as he maneuvered around the man, he started shooting toward the back of the FedEx vehicle multiple times," said Carlos Moore, the Grenada-based attorney who is representing Gibson.
Although Gibson got away unscathed, multiple bullets pierced the van he was driving. Moore said he believes the shooting was racially motivated and is asking law enforcement to investigate the incident as a hate crime.
"I believe they saw a Black man on a white man’s property, and they thought he looked suspicious, and they hauled off and chased him and tried to kill him. It’s just purely racism. Plain and simple," Moore said.
The two white men chasing Gibson were Gregory Case and Brandon Case, a father-son duo. The two men were arrested and charged on Feb. 1 by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. They posted bond and were released the same day. Moore, the attorney, says this incident is similar to what happened to Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia in 2020.
"Since he survived, he’s not only speaking for himself, but he’s speaking for all the Ahmaud Arberys, George Floyds and so many other countless Black men across America that were not blessed enough to survive," Moore said.
They are also considering filing civil suits and will be holding a rally in Brookhaven to continue pursuing justice for Gibson, Moore said.
