The program will include various events that'll be held across the state through July 4th of next year, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. At last week's kickoff event, Reeves said Mississippi has played a significant role in the nation's history and that there's much to celebrate.
“From the first successful human lung transplant to the birthplace of America's music, and as the heartbeat of the Civil Rights Movement, Mississippi has been at the forefront of dynamic change and influence on our great nation,” Reeves said.
The Mississippi America250 Commission, which was created by the Legislature in 2023, will help coordinate public events and grant opportunities for the program. Nancy Carpenter, who serves as its Development Director, announced that the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Mississippi Arts Commission will administer a statewide grant program to support community-led initiatives to participate in the national celebration.
“By supporting local initiatives that educate, commemorate, and inspire, this program will enrich Mississippi's cultural landscape and foster a deeper appreciation of our collective past,” Carpenter said.
Carpenter also announced several planned programs, like a new exhibit at the two Mississippi Museums launching next year that will highlight Mississippians and their influential creations. A calendar of affiliated events can be found at www.america250.ms.
