Gov. Tate Reeves and the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) held a press briefing Monday, March 16 to discuss the state’s preparedness and response activities for COVID-19.
MSDH State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs shared that there are 12 confirmed cases in the state. Dobbs outlined the process by which each case is handled, which includes a review from an official disease investigation team. There are no deaths at this time.
He also outlined that only individuals who have been exposed to the virus are required to self-quarantine for a minimum of 14 days. However, all Mississippians are asked to practice “social distancing,” or limiting their time around others in groups more than 10.
During the briefing, Reeves announced his signing of Executive Orders regarding the fallout from the state’s recent outbreak of the coronavirus. The aims of the orders address the following:
- The activation of the U.S. National Guard to be available at testing centers. Additional testing centers will be set up over the coming days and weeks across the state. MEMA and MSDH will have access to that personnel to ensure the safety of health care workers.
- Paid leave for any state or government employees that must take time off from work due to the virus. This includes school district employees.
- Support for school districts to set up distance learning options for students.
- Support for free and reduced lunch programs to continue throughout the management of the coronavirus outbreak.\
Reeves also stressed the importance of practicing thorough hygiene, as well as the state’s blood shortage, encouraging all those willing and able to donate to do so. He added that stores and business that carry grocery and household items will continue to be stocked during this time and encourages residents to avoid hoarding supplies.
