Ballot initiative 65 and Alternative Measure 65A will both be on the ballot. Angie Calhoun is with Medical Marijuana 2020. She says legalizing it could help people with 22 debilitating illnesses. "Epilepsy is one of the debilitating conditions and we know many, many children who are young and have been sent home to die, where medical marijuana has given those families hope and their children are actually living a quality of life."
Jim Perry is with the state board of health. He opposes legalizing medical marijuana but says alternative measure 65A would allow for more oversight by state government. "This is about money to them because they're marketing to kids, and they want to create this addiction for-profit enterprise like we've seen in other states," says Perry. "That's what this actual amendment says, and it goes way beyond whether or not you want to help people. If it's medicine, we want to treat it like medicine and that's the board of health's position."
If either measure passes, it will become part of the state's constitution.
