Tickets to Holiday Special Filming Available Now

MPB will film the next edition of Mississippi Antique Showcase - currently #5 in the local Nielsen ratings - for a holiday special airing in December. Antique enthusiasts are encouraged to bring holiday treasures (vintage ornaments, retro decorations, snow globes, figurines, tree toppers) and other storied pieces for appraisal at MPB on October 10 from 3 to 8 p.m. An Appraisal ticket is available for a $100 donation and an Observation ticket is $60. MPB at Mississippi's Largest Literary Lawn Party

Join MPB at the Mississippi Book Festival at the Mississippi Capitol on September 14. Before the event, listen to Mississippi Edition weekdays at 8:30 a.m. for author interviews. Visit the MPB media booth on the front lawn and the MPB Kids' Club - with Ed Said - inside the rotunda between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the event. Remember to look for the MPB Little Libraries with the free hand fans!

Blueberry Lime Layer Cake

Turn fresh blueberries into a decadent treat. This moist, lime-infused layer cake features thick whipped cream cheese frosting and a blueberry filling that can be splashed with gin. Embrace the warm weather with a burst of Summer flavors from Kitchen Vignettes with PBS Food.
 

Ingredients

For the Lime Cake:

  • 1 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1 ½ cup sugar
  • 2 ¼ cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ Tbsp organic lime zest (2 large limes)
  • 3 large eggs
  • ⅓ cup fresh-squeezed lime juice (2 large limes, use the same ones you grated)
  • 1 cup full-fat whole milk yoghurt
     

For the Whipped Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 2 packages 8 oz cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 ½ cup icing sugar
     

For the Blueberry Filling:

  • 3 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 2 Tbsp tapioca flour (or flour - for frozen berries, add an additional tablespoon)
  • 3 Tbsp lime juice
  • ¼ cup cane sugar
  • 2 Tbsp gin (optional)
     

For Decorating (optional):

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • Fresh lime slices

Next 'Day of da Vinci' in Columbus September 5

Another free interdisciplinary workshop for K-12 educators will be held at the Mississippi School for Math and Science in Columbus on September 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registered teachers will learn how to bring Leonardo da Vinci's innovations back to their classroom after a day of instruction with special resources, MDE compliant lesson plans, and a student project. Completion of all phases will earn three free Continuing Education Units (CEUs) towards state licensure. New dates have also been added for October, including a day at the Grammy Museum in Cleveland. 8th - 11th Graders Invited to Join MPB

Mississippi middle and high school students still have time to be part of the 2024-2025 MPB youth program. They can sharpen their media skills with the production of the MPBSC podcast and represent their communities at MPB functions. Application deadline for members is August 31.

MPB Highlights 2024 'YG&E Awards'

The "Young, Gifted & Empowered Awards" (YG&E) started in 2015 to tell the untold stories of young-African Americans from Mississippi and the south who are beating the odds and positively affecting change at local, national, and global levels. Tune in September 1 at 1 p.m. as YG&E honors Mississippi's young Black professionals who are champions in art, education, innovation, leadership, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.

Experts from both sides of the political aisle examine the reliability of national voting systems and voter confidence in this special from Firing Line. Margaret Hoover explores the reality of voters in the face of recent questions regarding the integrity of systems that vary state to state - and often town to town. Watch on August 30 at 8:30 p.m.

In "One Nation, Many Stories," explore the acclaimed filmmaker's more recent work with new interviews with Burns and his colleagues.
