The Sauce That Says “Y’all Come Back”

If there’s one condiment that captures the spirit of Southern hospitality in a single spoonful, it’s Comeback Sauce. Creamy, tangy, with just the right kick—this Mississippi-born staple is as versatile as it is iconic.

On the June 30 episode of Deep South Dining, hosts Malcolm White and Carol Palmer talked about the roots of this legendary sauce with their guests, tracing its origins back to Jackson, Mississippi, where it first graced the tables of a Greek-owned restaurant. Since then, it’s become a beloved fixture across the South.

Whether you’re dipping fries, dressing a salad, or adding zip to a sandwich, this homemade version will deliver flavor and tradition in every bite. Try the recipe below and bring a little Mississippi magic to your table.

Classic Southern Comeback Sauce

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Yield: About 1 ½ cups

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mayonnaise (preferably Duke’s or another Southern-style brand)
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup chili sauce (any tangy tomato-based variety)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Juice of half a lemon (or 1 tablespoon)
  • A few dashes of hot sauce to taste

Instructions:

  1. Mix it up: In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients until smooth and fully combined.
  2. Taste & tweak: Adjust seasoning—add more lemon for brightness, more hot sauce for heat, or more mayo if you prefer it milder.
  3. Chill: Let it rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. Serve: Use as a dip for fries, onion rings, fried green tomatoes, chicken tenders—or slather on sandwiches and burgers.

Pro Tip: For a spicier version, stir in a teaspoon of horseradish or a pinch of cayenne pepper. For extra Southern flair, pair it with catfish or hushpuppies.
