Hurricane Francine is approaching the Louisiana coast and is expected to make landfall Wednesday evening as a category 2 hurricane. National Weather Service advisories are warning of life-threatening storm surges of potentially 6 to 10 feet along the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines. Forecasts show the storm could hit Mississippi around 8 pm this evening

Michael Hill is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson. Hill says the storm is already experiencing dry areas and wind shear, which could impact its momentum as it moves into the state.

“We don't expect it to be a hurricane as it moves into Mississippi,” Hill says. “We expect it to be a weakening tropical storm.”

Rain between 4 to 6 inches is expected in southeastern Mississippi as Francine moves across.

Hill says there will also be a tornado threat for parts of Mississippi depending on how far east Francine goes. These pop-up tornadoes may give little warning to residents.

“They might fall in between radar scans,” Hill said. “They're going to be a little bit tougher to detect.”

Hill emphasized that now is the time to secure loose items around homes. This includes trash cans, lawn chairs and grills.

“As we prepare for Hurricane Francine, bring everything inside or tie it down,” Hill said. “Secure everything. Make all those preparations this morning and through the day today and have them done by this evening as the storm starts to push through.”

Hill says Mississippians should fill up their gas tanks, have a weather radio, batteries, chargers, and food. He also recommended having propane or charcoal grills. Ready kits should also be prepared in case of emergency and should include essential items.

“Be sure to have batteries, important documents, medications, food, some water, clothes, first aid kit, flashlights, whistles, anything that you need for lifesaving or first aid needs in your kit.” Hill said

Francine will be in the area between 8 pm tonight until 2 am tomorrow morning.

“The good news is that this is going to be a quick hitter and we're going to be probably done with it tomorrow afternoon,” Hill said. “This thing's going to get in here tonight. It's going to move all across the state and it should be out here for the most part by tomorrow afternoon.”

Rain and thunderstorms are expected Thursday morning. The hurricane can be tracked here.
