A South Mississippi mayor is joining fellow mayors in Washington D.C. to talk about the common needs of Mississippi River cities. MPB's Alexis Ware reports.
The mayor of Natchez Darryl Grennell is joining other city leaders across the nation to discuss sustainability of the Mississippi River. People across 75 cities from Minnesota to Louisiana are dependent on the river for jobs, recreation and even drinking water. Grennell says improving the conditions of the river will create more employment opportunities.
"An infrastructure investment plan that supports seven major u.s industry sectors creates nearly 100,000 thousand jobs it continues 1.5 billion jobs it sustains ecological assets to power our economy."
Across Mississippi, working to improve additional areas of infrastructure can also lead to job growth according to the Mississippi Economic Council. Scott Waller is the Interim President and CEO.
"Putting the types of dollars that we're talking about into transportation, the research we have shows there will be an immediate impact particularly in construction industry of about 4,000 jobs across the state."
Grennell and Waller agree more funding is needed to enhance infrastructure along the river and inland.
