Former Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Lucien Smith says every elected official who was saying Congress could overturn the certified votes of President-Elect Joe Biden are responsible for the riot at the nation’s Capitol; including President Donald Trump. This week, Trump was impeached for inciting an insurrection.
“I’m not sure it serves much purpose other than satisfying a large portion of the Democratic base who has wanted this since November of 2016. It doesn’t make what happened any less reprehensible. But I’m not sure impeachment serves a meaningful purpose,” said Smith.
Smith believes Mississippi’s Delegation of 3 Republicans who voted against impeachment and one Democrat who voted to impeach the president, followed their conscience. He primarily blames one senator for the riots.
“Josh Hawley, the junior senator from Missouri, because him seconding the objection sent a clear signal to people that there was a meaningful possibility that the election was being stolen and that Congress had an ability not to count the duly certified votes,” said Smith.
Smith doesn’t think Hawley should be prosecuted, but voted out of office. Jacqueline Amos is the National Democratic Committeewoman for Mississippi. She says Trump has inflamed mistrust of government and fueled divisiveness. She thinks impeaching him was necessary
“I think it was the right thing to do. I think we needed to make that statement, to make that happen even though I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people saying that he was almost gone. And that the transition is really, really, close,” said Amos.
Amos says the November elections were the most secure ones she has witnessed over the years.
