On Saturday morning, Mayor John Lee confirmed with MPB News that four died during a shooting in Leland on Friday night after a football game at the city's high school.
The shooting did not occur at the school. The mayor said the number of injured as of Saturday morning was 16 people.
"Prayers and condolences goes out to the families of those that lost their lives," Lee told MPB. "Prayer for the city is all we need right now."
Leland police declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation.
Other agencies, including Washington County Sheriff and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety also declined to comment due to the ongoing investigation.
Marshay Lawson of the FBI’s Jackson division said they're asking for videos and photos to assist in the investigation.
“We encourage them to please report that to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or tips.fbi.gov,” Lawson wrote in an email. “Any piece of information could be crucial.”
The FBI additionally established a web page specifically for tips regarding the Leland incident. Those photos and videos can be submitted anonymously.
There are currently four suspects that the FBI is looking for in Leland -- as of Sunday, their identities were still unknown. A release from the Jackson field office said that the "investigation continues with more arrests anticipated."
For many of these small towns, like Leland, the unusual levels of violence have shaken people up.
Superintendent Jessie King of the Leland school district said the shooting during their high school's homecoming festivities shocked the community.
"I'm a graduate of Leland, grew up in Laland," King told MPB. "We've always said nothing like this happens in our community."
Leland was not the only city that suffered a shooting this weekend. A shooting in Heidelberg has ended in two dead and one taken into custody.
Another shooting took place in Rolling Fork.
On Facebook, Governor Tate Reeves said one of the dead in Heidelberg was an expectant mother.
“Our state is praying for the victims and their families, as well as the entire Heidelberg and Leland communities,” he wrote. “Those responsible will be brought to justice.”
The shooting in Heidelberg took place on-campus at the local high school, said police chief Cornell White. Both Heidelberg and Rolling Fork had football games at their local high schools on Friday night.
The next day, shootings occurred around homecoming games for Alcorn State and Jackson State universities. ASU's shooting happened on-campus, leaving one confirmed dead and two injured.
"What was meant to be a joyous occasion quickly turned tragic when the life of Ms. Brekyra Fisher was taken, and others wer einjured and traumatized by gun violence on our campus," wrote ASU president Tracy M. Cook in a statement.
The shooting after JSU's game happened off-campus in the tailgating area of the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. A child was injured as a result.
The Mississippi Burea of Investigation and Mississippi Department of Safety are assisting with multiple investigations.
