The Blair E. Batson Tower at Children’s of Mississippi is undergoing a significant transformation to modernize its facilities and enhance patient care, while the Alyce G. Clarke Center for Medically Fragile Children nears completion.

Originally opened in 1997, the Batson Tower has served as a cornerstone of pediatric care in Mississippi for nearly three decades. Renovations currently underway aim to align the tower’s design and amenities with those of the Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower, which opened in 2020. The third floor, soon to be dedicated to cardiac care, is nearing completion, with additional updates to medical-surgical units scheduled for 2026.

“The Batson Tower was state-of-the-art when it opened, and so many families and caregivers have memories of the colorful 1990s décor, which was popular at the time,” said Dr. Guy Giesecke, CEO of children’s and women’s hospitals at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. “While the furnishings have been well cared for, after 28 years, it is time for an update.”

The Batson Tower treats a wide range of pediatric conditions, including cancer, neurological disorders, congenital heart disease, orthopedic surgical needs, trauma, and respiratory illnesses. The renovations are designed to ensure that all patients receive care in a modern, family-friendly environment.

Dr. Nikki Cowan, director of nursing for the medical-surgical and psychiatric units at Children’s of Mississippi, emphasized that the changes are more than cosmetic.

“We will have improved technology and communication systems,” Cowan said. “In each unit, there will also be a new staff station for the health care team. We’ll also have medicine and nutrition rooms and family areas.”

Philanthropic support has played a key role in the renovation efforts. Laughs 4 Life, a Hattiesburg-based comedy fundraiser, along with Candace and Kent Oliver, are funding a new activity room on the third floor. This space will mirror the Laughs 4 Life Smile Room on the fifth floor, which features a mural of a blue sky and rainbow, along with interactive NunoErin digital boards for games, puzzles, and drawing.

These updates reflect a broader commitment to improving pediatric care across Mississippi. As the Batson Tower is revitalized, the Alyce G. Clarke Center for Medically Fragile Children is preparing to open its doors, offering specialized care for children with complex medical needs.
