The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor (OSA) has signed an agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to participate in the federal 287(g) program, which allows state and local law enforcement agencies to assist with immigration enforcement.

State Auditor Shad White announced that two OSA agents volunteered to undergo training in immigration law enforcement and will be available to support ICE operations when needed. The agents will continue their core duties of investigating the misuse of public funds but will now also be equipped to assist during emergencies.

“This partnership gives us the opportunity to support ICE and help reduce the burden of illegal immigration on Mississippi taxpayers,” White said. “We’re committed to doing our part.”

The 287(g) program provides participating agencies with access to ICE training and resources. White cited a 2024 report from his office estimating that illegal immigration costs the state around $100 million annually in public services.

The OSA’s participation in the program is part of a broader effort to enhance interagency cooperation and improve public accountability. White also encouraged other law enforcement agencies in the state to consider joining the initiative.
